Percussion
The percussion family comprises of a vast array of instruments from all over the world! There are two main categories: unpitched percussion and pitched percussion. You will see percussionists using lots of different techniques and playing in lots of different styles. There are hundreds if not thousands of different percussion instruments, and after the voice, they were the first types of instruments to be used by humans.
Advantages
Why you should play percussion instruments
-
Versatile
Percussionists have to be able to play all the different instruments, so there is always something for every style of music!
-
Extremely Fun!
Percussionists often get some very silly parts to play, including some comedic references like whistles, rattles, whips and hooters!
-
Sociable
As part of the percussion section, you often work as a very close team, swapping parts and instruments to make sure that everything gets covered

Pitched Percussion
These instruments create an identifiable pitch when struck. These include marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel, timpani and tubular bells

Unpitched Percussion
These instruments produce a sound of indeterminate pitch when struck. These include lots of different drums (snare, bass, tom tom, djembe, surdo etc), cymbals and auxiliary percussion (shakers, woodblocks, triangles etc)

Drum Kit
A group of unpitched percussion instruments set up on stands, designed to be played by one person
