BYSO auditions

Would you like to be involved in the Berkshire Youth Symphony Orchestra? BYSO is the county level orchestra for young people in Berkshire, and during 2020/21 the concert repertoire included works by, amongst others, Korngold, Benjamin Britten and de Falla, conducted by Steven Threlfall.

Auditions for new members and section leaders year are being held on:

Friday 10 September (evening): brass and percussion

Saturday 11 September (from 2pm): strings and woodwind

Both sessions will be held at Reading Music Centre

The entry standards* for BYSO 2021-2022 are:

Woodwind: Grade 7

Brass: Grade 7

Percussion: Grade 6

Strings: Grade 7

* You do not need to have taken the relevant exam but must be able to demonstrate that you can play to the required standard in the audition

Everyone who auditions will be required to:

1. Perform a short (2 to 3 minute) unaccompanied piece of their own choice. Percussionists should perform a tuned percussion piece

2. Prepare a selection of orchestral excerpts (these will be made available on this page shortly)

3. Sight read a short unprepared orchestral excerpt

4. Talk informally with their panel of family instrument specialists about their musical activities and ambitions

To register, simply click on the registration link at the top of the page and complete the form. If you have any questions about the audition process, please contact us.

Please note that 100% attendance at BYSO courses is vital and any absences must be pre-agreed by the BYSO staff team.
