Recruting a Design and Digital Media Assistant (level 3 Apprentice)

Berkshire Maestros has created an exciting new role for a Design and Digital Media Apprentice! Working in partnership with Newbury College, the successful candidate will be able to earn whilst they learn as they commence their digital design career.

The organisation:

Berkshire Maestros is a long established children’s charity offering musical education opportunities to children across Berkshire, regardless of ability, background or circumstance. We work closely with schools across the county to allow all children access to music and the opportunity to play an instrument. Through our seven music centres, we offer children of all ages the chance to sing, play and enhance their life-skills through music. Our choirs, orchestras and ensembles perform at venues across the county and beyond – helping the children to develop their team-working and communications skills as well as building their confidence.

Headquartered in Reading, the organisation has centres in Bracknell, Newbury, Windsor and Wokingham (Bulmershe and Emmbrook) as well as satellites in Caversham and Hungerford. Further expansion is planned for the coming year.

Background to the Vacancy

The marketing department will include three key roles:

  • Marketing Manager
  • Marketing and Fundraising Officer
  • Digital Media and Design Assistant - level 3 apprenticeship (currently vacant)

The team is based in Berkshire Maestros head office at Reading Music Centre in Tilehurst and the successful applicant will work alongside colleagues at this office.

Desired Skills:

  • Good spoken and written English
  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Good people skills
  • Design skills and creative flair
  • Strong IT skills (with awareness of Adobe software packages)
  • Administration and organisational skills.

Qualifications:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades A-C or equivalent, including English and Maths (or be working towards achieving grades A-C or equivalent in these two subjects alongside the apprenticeship)
  • A creative or design related subject would be beneficial
  • Able to demonstrate strong IT skills would be advantageous

Desired Qualities

  • Personal, presentable, articulate
  • Some commercial awareness

Summary Job Description:

Digital Media and Design Assistant

Duties include:

  • Assisting the Marketing Manager and supporting the marketing team with marketing activities.
  • Design and production of marketing materials and literature; brochures, leaflets, posters, postcards, folders and other items as required.
  • Updating and maintaining the marketing department's documentation and databases and assisting in managing this data in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act and other regulations as applicable.
  • Uploading marketing material to online libraries, internet groups and social media sites.
  • Assisting with design and maintenance of the corporate website and related websites.
  • Occasionally preparing material for partner websites.
  • Liaising with teaching staff to provide promotional support for lessons, courses and concerts.
  • Liaising with event administrators to provide promotional support including; posters, banners etc. for events. This may include attendance at some events outside of normal hours.
  • Supporting the Marketing and Fundraising Officer with social media updates.
  • Assisting with the preparation of support materials for senior management such as slide set, handouts, business cards etc
  • Assisting with the development of sponsorship packages and support materials for grant applications.

Undertake other duties commensurate with the post that may be assigned by the marketing and communications manager from time to time.

Hours and pay

This apprenticeship role will be for 37.5 hours per week, typically working Monday to Friday, including one full day at college. A wage of £5.50 per hour is offered for this role.

Occasional work outside of hours may be required and this will be recompensed as Time of in Lieu (TOIL) by agreement with the line manager (Marketing and Communications Manager).

Future Prospects:

On completion of the apprenticeship (at least 15 months), a candidate who has performed well may receive an offer of either contract or permanent employment in an entry level role with Berkshire Maestros. The salary offered will be commensurate with the role and the abilities of the candidate.
